What Is a Heavyweight T-Shirt? GSM & Fabric Guide
Why YEMAT Makes Its Streetwear in Portugal
Quick answer: a 450 GSM hoodie uses fabric weighing 450 grams per square metre. That places it at the very heavy end of sweatshirt fabrics. A 450 GSM hoodie normally feels dense, warm and structured, but GSM alone does not determine quality: fibre, fleece construction, pattern, hood, rib and stitching still matter.
YEMAT uses 450 GSM brushed organic cotton fleece for the Force Hoodie because the design requires the fabric to contribute to the silhouette rather than simply hang from the body.
What does GSM mean for a hoodie?
GSM means grams per square metre and measures fabric mass (our guide to GSM and heavyweight T-shirts covers the jersey side). As GSM increases, a hoodie generally becomes heavier, warmer and more structured. It also takes longer to dry and may feel excessive in hot weather.
There is no single universal industry definition for “heavyweight.” In the current streetwear market, fabrics around 320–400 GSM are often described as heavyweight, while 450 GSM sits toward the extra-heavy or ultra-heavy end.
What does a 450 GSM hoodie feel like?
Substantial. You notice the weight when you pick it up. With brushed cotton fleece, the inside can feel soft and warm while the outer face remains clean and structured. That combination makes 450 GSM particularly suited to oversized silhouettes where the hoodie is intended to hold its own shape.
450 GSM vs 300 GSM hoodies
| Feature | 300 GSM | 450 GSM |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | Midweight to heavy | Very heavy |
| Warmth | Moderate | Higher |
| Drape | Softer | More structured |
| Layering | Easier under jackets | More likely to act as the main layer |
| Drying time | Faster | Slower |
| Best use | Broad year-round wear | Cooler weather and statement structure |
The “better” option depends on what you want. If you need a light layer, 450 GSM may be unnecessary. If you want a hoodie with weight and architectural shape, it can make sense.
Brushed fleece vs French terry
GSM does not tell you the inner construction. Brushed fleece has a soft, raised interior created by brushing the fabric surface, which increases the cosy, insulating feel. French terry typically has visible loops on the inside and can feel less plush and more breathable at the same weight.
The Force Hoodie Black and Force Hoodie Beige use 450 GSM brushed organic cotton fleece.
Why 450 GSM works with an oversized fit
Oversized hoodies depend on proportion. A dropped shoulder, wider body and larger sleeve can look intentionally sculpted or simply too big depending on the pattern and fabric. Heavy fleece gives the pattern more physical support. The same 450 GSM fleece is used in our heavyweight crewneck jumper.
The Force Hoodie uses a dropped shoulder, generous body and sleeve, and double-layer cotton hood. At 450 GSM, the fleece sits away from the frame and helps the hood and shoulder hold their intended line.
Is a 450 GSM hoodie too warm?
It can be in hot weather. Fabric mass and brushed fleece both add warmth. A 450 GSM hoodie makes most sense when you want a substantial outer layer, live in cooler conditions, spend time in air-conditioned environments or simply prefer heavy garments.
For tropical heat or intense activity, a lighter sweatshirt is the more practical choice.
Does 450 GSM mean premium quality?
Not by itself. A heavy hoodie can still have weak seams, poor rib recovery, an awkward pattern or low-quality yarn. When comparing products, look beyond the weight:
- Fibre composition.
- Fleece or terry construction.
- Hood construction.
- Rib quality at cuffs and hem.
- Pattern and grading.
- Stitching and finishing.
- Manufacturing origin.
- Specific care instructions.
How to wash a 450 GSM hoodie
Heavy cotton holds a lot of water and takes time to dry. YEMAT recommends washing at 30°C or below, inside out and with similar colours. Line dry in the shade and never tumble dry. Do not use bleach or fabric softener, and iron cool on the reverse without placing the iron directly on the print.
Avoiding high heat is especially important on an oversized hoodie because unwanted shrinkage changes the proportions you paid for.
What is YEMAT’s 450 GSM hoodie made from?
The Force Hoodie is made from 100% organic cotton brushed fleece, designed in Australia and cut and sewn in Portugal. The same 450 GSM fabric weight is also used for the Relic Jumper.
